Doug,

I started again from scratch, new download image and different sd card.
I got the same result with *81, so ran saytime.pl which worked fine.
I checked on the hour and got the correct 12 hour time announcement from 
crontab.
*81 from dvmobile connection also worked ok.

So I went back to my backup img  from last October but did not run the 
update.
*81 from dtmf then worked correctly every time, however when I ran update
it no longer functioned. Since I had run update a number of times from last
October I think the problem has arisen recently.
