[arm-allstar] 2 nodes direct connect?

I got my new VHF node (and old extended-number UHF node) all online
and showing up on the stats page, etc.
Working great.
I have both units online, and added the stuff to make the new one
automagically link up permanent at boot.
From what I can tell, this is linking out to Allstar and back in.
Is there a way/config that would let one connect to the other
directly without contacting the Allstar network?
(URL to a doc if one is already written that google and I cant find? )
I would still like both to show up and not go totally private, but am
thinking if I can have both link directly peer to peer over the
private network and not be reliant on touching the Internet (in case
Spectrum decides to do more work upstream...smh) the 2 machines would
not lose the link between themselves.
I know with Asterisk-based VoIP phones, I can do a direct Dial by IP,
where 1 talks direct to the other via IP address.
Is there some way to do this on for the nodes? Im guessing either in
Rpt or Extensions?
I know it is NOT possible via Echolink (researched way back when I
had just EL on the machine).
Thanks!
