[arm-allstar] Simplex and Allstar

Kip,

Simplex is easy. Set duplex=1 in rpt.conf.

; duplex=1 - Half duplex with telemetry tones
; and hang time. Does not repeat audio.
; This mode is preferred when interfacing a
; simplex node.

If you are going to use a mobile radio, you need one with COS, PTT, Audio in and out. The simplest way I've found is a Motorola GM300 or CDM radio with the Repeater Build RIM Maxtrac interface.

That gives you the sound card and COS/PTT interfaces that connect to a pi via USB.

The downside of simplex is that while somebody is talking and the receiver is captured, another operator (you) has to DTMF control of the node. Having ssh or web access to Supermon is a way around that.

Subject: [arm-allstar] Simplex and Allstar

I am wondering if anyone has experience with linking simplex using Allstar.

The NWS has two counties that use the same frequencies, with different
PL Tones. Both are a distance away and they interfere with each other.
An unacceptable solution is for them to stop one net while they talk to
the other net. At our distance they cannot get us on UHF because the UHF
antenna is lower on the tower.

An option I was wondering about was bringing up a VHF link or simplex
channel during a weather net for just the NWS to use.

I know Allstar works in simplex mode, because I see the option in the
configuration.

What are your thoughts about that idea?

Part 2: If I use a mobile VHF simplex radio, none of them have a COR
signal to indicate that something is being received. How does that work
with Allstar? Do I need a special hardware interface if there is no COR
signal? If so what?
