When you have physical access to the device, you can always get back in.

Follow this tutorial
   https://linux.tips/tutorials/how-to-boot-raspberry-pi-into-single-user-mode
to boot in "single user mode".  This allows root access to the device 
without a password.  You can then user the passwd command to set the 
root password to a known value.

Once you are back in the device as root, you can change whatever you need 
to.
