I hope this trick will work for you. I think you are right to aim at a better radio than the baofeng. These radios are ok when you want to do casual work, but they are a little to cheap for something more serious. For example I programmed the squelch tone on my baofeng to 136.5Hz but I can open it by sending down to 127.3Hz or up to 146.2Hz. I might get an old Motorola from eBay soon.
