If one wanted to get fancy, you could have a script called by a DTMF
command which toggled a setting (update tonight or not, normally off?)
and announced the new setting, so that the control operator could
control how often the CRON job actually did the actual nightly update
request.
A simple script call in cron to something which tested the flag/toggle
and then conditionally did the upgrade (or not) would then effect the
requested/scheduled update. Cron would call this script instead of the
actual update command.
Perhaps too cute but it would give a bit more control back to the
operator at the expense of just a little bit of script coding.
