John,
First, one thing I would ask you and others not to do is reply to digest
messages. It leaves a trail of non-related messages in the thread and also
has no identifiable subject. I am replying to this one but I have deleted
all prior messages.
Classic Allstar (the way Allstar has been since its inception) downloads a
node list at boot and every 10 minutes thereafter. This results in a delay
of up to 5-15 minutes or sometimes more when you first come online before
you can connect to another node. Allstar has always been this way and users
have understood this.
Hamvoip developed a method of accessing node information using DNS lookups
in the same way you would lookup a web page base on a URL. This is a very
fast and efficient way to do it and results in connections being able to be
made in seconds as opposed to many minutes using the file method. This also
greatly reduces overall data transfer.
This DNS method while out there in beta form to hundreds of users since
last December has not yet been rolled out to everyone. You need to have the
lookup method at BOTH ends of a connection for it to have full benefits.
In this interim period many will still have to deal with the longer connect
times at boot which as stated was the way it was and we lived with it. The
best way to deal with it is not turn your system on and off. Most Allstar
users are 24/7 and do not have this issue.
The DNS feature has many advantages but is particularly useful in portable
and mobile operations where system are not steadily on.
Also to be mentioned is the current fact that the original flat file system
is not working well. There are reports of continual failures to download
the nodes file. Using the DNS feature and disabling the file downloads
altogether solves this problem. I sent you the instructions to do that and
if you need any help let me know.
