Lloyd,

 You can't start the script with the NOW command as it requires a key press
to start. You could go in and eliminate the key press start in the script
for the NOW option. Commenting the "read -n 1" line by placing a # before
it should solve your problem.

echo "$NEWSTYPE news will start $TIME and use $MODE $MODETYPE mode on node
- $NODE"
echo -n "Press any key to start news..."
read -n 1
