Buddy,
You gave a lot of info but I need to know a few key things. First of all
what version of the code are you running? What Pi are you using?
Assuming you are using a Pi 3 built-in wifi) with the version 1.02 code you
need to download the additional wifi script as noted in the readme pdf file
which is downloadable in a link on the hamvoip.org webpage right after the
1.02 download. Follow the instructions there. You do not need to manually
edit a file.
The portable node would stand-alone connected to you phone hotspot. It does
not need to be connected to your home node but you cannot connect in on a
hotspot node only out so it is a good idea to connect to your home node and
others can connect there to reach you.
Also not all hotspots work the same. If you are using AT&T you might have
problems others like verizon, freedom-pop, sprint, etc. seem to work fine.
