The BBB has a powerdown button just to the right of the Ethernet connector. This is described in the scripts howto on the web page. In the 1.2.1 version It announces on the local RF node that it is shutting down. The power light never goes off but the four LED's will cease any activity after about 10 seconds. It is then safe to remove the power plug and then the SD card. Always insert the card before applying power.

The RPi2 has no power button. If you would like to install one a mod is described in a how-to on the web page.

On either system you have the option of shutdown at the Linux prompt or via DTMF. You would need to activate the DTMF shutdown in rpt.conf under the functions section. There are six definitions there for various things like restart, halt, reboot, etc. that are commented out. Uncomment and change the codes to oneof your definition for those you want to activate.

So on the BBB, what is the safe way to power one down to remove the SD card.
I have been using the shutdown command and then removing the power plug. The remove the micro sd card. And basically doing the reverse when I'm ready to install the card.
I've been reading that pulling the power plug could cause voltage spikes.
