Doug,

My guess is the midlands are like the motorolas and have amplified mics and
take a lot of drive if you're not amplifying them. If the gain give me what
I need I should be fine.

With a 1k tone from the simpleusb-tune-menu I get 3.5khz of audio.  With
the setting to 999. I bet the extra bit of gain should balance things out
just fine.

I have a metric-sh!t-ton of these low band midlands so I'd like to press a
few into service.
