A URI is over $100. A RIM Lite on Repeater Builder is around $50-ish
depending on which one you get, or you can buy two sound fobs on Amazon for
$11 ane modify one/both yourself with 4 wires and a soldering iron (more or
less).
Yes you are on the right track. There are lots of guides on the
Internet/YouTube. This is the guide I've used to modify a FOB.

You would still need to build/buy a cable to connect the FOB and the
radios. Building would probably be easier tbh.
