Mark,

You are describing the Ping Pong effect

You can try disabling the key/unkey courtesy tones in rpt.conf
nonounkeyct=0 (I personally don't like them or any announcements,
especially when someone connects.)

Or, you can try increasing the rxondelay setting in simpleusb.conf.
