There are a couple of things going on here.

1. The SIP phone (or whatever) is likely NOT generating DTMF. It is 
sending data to the node. Hence there is no side tone (you wanting to 
hear the DTMF on the phone).

2. The phone is full duplex, so if the node could generate a tone back 
to the phone to indicate TX status, it would also be transmitted on the 
radio or link.

On my phone, when I go to Tx mode (after *99), I can hear the noise go 
down a bit. It just gets quieter.

Sorry I'm no expert at asterisk to say how to fix this.
