If this is a half duplex RF link to a repeater, try enabling linktolink
in rpt.conf under your node's stanza.
linktolink=yes
then either restart Asterisk, or do rpt reload, or just reload, from the
Asterisk CLI.
This will allow you to put your node radio into transmit mode while it
is still receiving, I.E. no need to wait for the repeater to drop, as if
you are using a local microphone on that radio, albeit with some latency.
I do exactly this for a frequency agile remote base I set up in North
Carolina, so I can use it from DVSwitch, IAXRPT or another analog
repeater with ASL or HamVoIP connected in full duplex mode.

While testing my IAXRPT client I notice that it does not return to receiving audio until the repeater drops carrier. I have a Hamvoip image on a Pi with RA70 sound board. The sound card is connected to a transceiver which is setup for my local repeater. When I inky with IAXRPT the radio immediately unkeys and I will hear the repeater id or if I am in QSO I hear the other person over the radio speaker but not the IAXRPT client until the repeater drops carrier.
