Doug WA3DSP and Bryan K6CBR ... thanks guys, those bits of info cleared 
up the mystery nicely.  I should have seen those earlier.

Now I can move on to configuring the Pi's CM119 Hats and getting the 
radios cabled up.  Fortunately there is lots of time to get this up and 
running properly, given the current state of the 10M band.

Currently it looks like we will be using Alinco DR-03T radios at each 
end (discontinued but still available).

Without a doubt I'll likely have more dumb questions later on :-)
