David,

   I need to know more about why you want to stay connected but mute audio.
You can control nodes without being connected to them as long as they are
yours and you have password access. I don't see any reason the stay
connected if you don't want audio feed. There is a monitor mode which
allows reception in one direction but not transmission but I am not sure
that is what you want.
