[arm-allstar] Credit to Raspberry Pi

This really doesn't have anything to do with ham radio, but FWIW, another use for a Pi, is a "pi-hole". I had a Pi2 sitting around, so I installed pi-hole into Raspbian Stretch. Pi-hole "sinks" the advertisements that come into frames in browsers. You install pi-hole in Raspbian, and you set your router's DHCP server to point DNS to the pi-hole instead of your router providing DNS. I'm an IT guy with Windows Servers running AD, and I simply set the AD DNS to forward DNS queries to the pi-hole instead of the ISP's DNS servers (or Google's).

https://pi-hole.net

If you need help, I'll try if I'm available (very busy), but don't reply via ARM Allstar group or use this group for pi-hole information. I just wanted to add to what Doug said about the many uses of a Pi. PM me at ad2dx at arrl dot net

Thanks, and 73.

    Joshua,

Thanks for the kind words but as far as programming most of the credit
goes to Dave, KB4FXC but we work well together as a team.

If and when we do a PC version it will definitely not be Windows based. It
would be running on the same Linux OS that it is now on the Pi, Archlinux.
While the PC is obviously more powerful the Pi is a great platform and does
not get nearly the credit it should for its capabilities. The current Pi
3B+ in turbo mode will handle most all Allstar applications. I realize
there are some few situations where the PC version might be useful. This is
mostly confined to situations where you would either not have Internet or
have poor Internet and need to run a virtual PC at a data center. Allstar
does not work well or at least not as well as we would like it to on a
virtual PC. In that regard one thing we have operating but not officially
announced yet is a "Pi Farm" or virtual Pi which is a bunch of Pi's at a
data center that users can rent time on. This eliminates the problem for
those in bad or no Internet areas.

Also keep in mind that several Pi's draw less power than a PC so running
all your applications on one Pi is really not necessary. It is a shame that
some ham communication applications are exclusively written in Windows and
not in Linux. Windows is something I gave up several years ago with the
advent of version 10. Ubuntu with an occasional use of virtualbox running
windows 7, when necessary, is about all I do in Windows!
