Just to be clear the script backups only backup areas of Hamvoip where user
changes are likely to be made. There is no reason to backup more than once
if you have a stable system. In that case nothing really changes. The ONLY
reliable way to backup the entire system is to remove the SD card and copy
the image on another computer. Then keep the backup file or a backup SD
card made from it as available at the server site.
So the methods are:
1) user files backup to usb stick using file-backup.sh in which case if you
had an SD card failure you would need to first download a new image to a
new SD card and then restore the files from the usb stick or wherever you
backed it up.
2) Complete SD card backup which would require shutdown of the server
removal of existing SD card and reading of it.
I also might add that as long as you have your node particulars - node
number, node password, etc. available or written down somewhere it is not
hard to set a simple node configuration up. It might take 5 minutes to
write the image to the SD card and another 5 minutes to go through the
setup. It would really not take any longer than doing the backups and
restoring later. In other words backing up in most cases is probably a
waste of time unless it is a complex system setup or a server that is very
important, like at a repeater site, etc. in which case I would recommend a
full SD card backup once and then incremental backups to a USB stick.
Also there is no real advantage to backing up to a remote system. If you
need to restore things you will need to get the backed up files back on the
server so if they are already there on a USB stick it would be an
advantage. Nothing says you can't scp the backups somewhere else
additionally if you are so inclined.
