Hi Jim,
Yes, you are correct---ASL and HamVoIP both maintain registration systems,
at this point.
If you're running any recent HamVoIP image (as of or later than:
V1.5.3-38-app_rpt-0.327-08/14/2018), you're already using the HamVoIP DNS
lookup system whenever you do a node lookup internally in app_rpt for
connections, either in or out bound.
Last year I started writing a brand new IAX2 registration engine, based on
comments and recommendations from some friends of mine in the VoIP phone
business. This new software is not part of nor uses any pieces from
Asterisk. It's a brand new registration strategy, while maintaining full
compatibility with Asterisk. By design, this new software has eliminated
serious scaling issues found with all currently released versions of the
Asterisk registration software.
Also, there are more benefits of the new registration code, features added
to support the specific needs of AllStar---like what UDP port to
advertise and node groups. More details about this to follow.
We have NEVER intended for the HamVoIP registration system to be
incompatible with ASL nodes, even though rumors to the contrary seem
rampant. So, yes, you'll certainly still be able to connect to ASL systems
once the HamVoIP upgrade is complete.
We will provide some migration tools in an upcoming software update. I'm
putting most of my "hobby" hours into completing these tools, at this
point.
We've already got MANY users registering on the new HamVoIP system. I've
been handing out registration statements per e-mail request for months
now. If you'd like to try the HamVoIP registration, just send me an e-mail
request, including your node numbers.

understand my question. As I understand it, there are ASL servers and
Hamvoip servers. Is there a plan for moving folks who are using the
Hamvoip image to be automatically moved over to the Hamvoip servers and if
so is there a timeline? And will there be a means for those on the Hamvoip
servers to still connect to folks still on the ASL servers.
Appreciate all the hard work being done, and the fantastic support provided.
Jim,
