Not having the hardware you have it would be hard for me to diagnose. I
have never connected I2c to the Pi but I did to the BeagleBone Black many
years ago and wrote a howto that is on the hamvoip.org web page. There are
tests you can run to determine if it is recognized and responding to
commands. It would have an I2C address and you can use I2cdetect from the
tools package to see if it is recognized. Are you seeing that? Can you
configure it?
