[arm-allstar] Full duplex versus simplex

Jim,

This is very easy minus the RF side of it. To use a FOB with a repeater
system, that is a separate receiver and transmitter you connect COS and RX
audio to the receiver and PTT and TX audio to the transmitter. You only
need a single FOB. In rpt.conf you set duplex=2 This turns on full duplex
meaning if the COS is activated it in turn activates the PTT. There are
other things that can be set like hang time, timeouts, etc but for the most
part it is that simple.

You can make a simple local (short range) repeater for you or your
neighborhood using two transceivers or a separate receiver and transmitter
on widely separated frequencies and antennas. A real repeater uses a
duplexer and a single antenna with standard frequency spacing.

Another option and the way I run one of my repeaters is split site. If you
have two sites separated by a half mile or so and both ends have Internet
you can use Allstar to connect them and have a rather simple split site
repeater.

So the Alstar end is easy, the RF end is up to you. You could use something
as simple as two Baofeng radios or get really fancy with a commercial
repeater and duplexer. Also remember if you are going wide area you will
probably have to get coordinated by your local repeater group.

There are plenty of people on this list using Allstar as a repeater
controller so I am sure you can get help if you need it.
