Alan,

  I forget what you did? If you set duplex=0 then yes all telemetry is shut
off and there is no way to selectively turn it on. If you set
telemdefault=0 no connect/disconnect then the time and other play message
should still work. They do here.  telemdefault=2 is the default and
preferred. Then you hear your connects and disconnects but not others. If
you don't have that feedback it is a little hard to know if you are
connected to the wrong place! A slipped finger on DTMF.
