Mike, at al:
Good you mentioned the change of bind addr.
For those that do not know, the "bind addr" in iax.conf is what tells
Asterisk what IP address to listen to, given the protocol config, in
this case, IAX2.
In most cases, bindaddr should be either:
bindaddr=0.0.0.0 ; (default) this is to listen any IP assigned
to your box
-or-
bindaddr=192.168.1.15 ; listen at this specific IP
In home installations where IP's are assigned by your edge rouer, keep
bindaddr=0.0.0.0
as the IP to your box may change. There are not any security or
performance advantages to be gained by changing it from default.
This said, if you want to allow incoming connections, The IP assigned
to your box can be done in a couple ways. The easiest way is to assign
a static IP, of which can be entered when firsttime.sh is run. The IP
address given needs to be within the subnet your edge router is using
for the LAN, side, but *outside* of the DHCP range.
Some retail store edge routers allow the option to always issue a
specific IP address when a MAC address of you ASL box is known. This
option can be used when you are not familiar with the file
/etc/network/interfaces.
Usually, home routers' DHCP assignments are from:
192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.254
Your home edge router usually resides at 192.168.1.1, so you have th
liberty to assign any IP address from
192.168.1.2 thru 192.168.1.99
Some store bought edge routers use some other number
192.168.10.1
for example.
Private LAN IP address ranges from store bought edge routers can vary
from
192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.0
192.168. is always going to be the same.
IMHO, I'd says that unless you have lots of knowledgeable experience
with key=value pairs in the IAX.conf, do not mess with it.
Not saying the lines in IAX.conf are perfect, however, over the years,
they have been perfected to *very* reliable out-of-the-box operation
for ASL.
