Jim,
It is very hard to tell. One way is that the Fakes usually have a
continuing/same serial number. That is when they produce a batch they all
have the same serial number. True chips have sequential serial numbers.

The other thing is that the true FTDI chips are not cheap. I would say any
USB to serial claimed FTDI adapter that costs less than about $12 is fake.
All of the cheap boards are fakes and back when we were doing testing on
them they all failed some key tests.
So a warning to those who buy cheap FTDI is they may work but more likely
may not work. Also the dosbox FTDI will work differently than Windows and
Linux will work differently than Windows. So I would recommend the USB to
serial cable specified in the howto or equivalent if you don't want
aggravation.
