Fred,
In my case my entire array if Pi's, cable modem, router, switch, and a few
other things are on a 1KVA APC UPS. Other things throughout the house are
on smaller UPS's. However the UPS's would only have to handle about 10
seconds of an outage as I have a 20KW natural gas backup generator. This is
the ideal but I know not everyone can have that. I do recommend a UPS for a
Pi that is in a more critical or remote application but most are not. If
you have a backup of your SD card it is a simple mater to swap cards and
even if you don't getting a system back up from scratch would take about 20
minutes, most of witch is burning the card.
