If you cant get to the COS signal (many newer radios its inside the
chip with no pin), you could try this:

It detects output (when radio unsquelches) on the ext spk line and
triggers the transistor to ground the PTT/trigger a relay.
I will be using this circuit when I tie 2 FT-2800's together with a
URI to make a VHF repeater.
