[arm-allstar] How to connect to hotel Wi-Fi while traveling with a portable node

Hi Steve,

The way I have solved this problem many times is to setup the RPi3 as a
simple NAT router. I then connect a laptop PC to the RPi3 via the wired
Ethernet interface, which is configured with a static private IP subnet. I
then configure the RPi3 WiFi as needed to access the public Access Point,
using the Admin Menu.

Once the RPi3 WiFi is up, I point my laptop web browser at some Internet
website (e.g.: google.com) and get redirected to the captive portal web
page, where I login however needed...And, my RPi3 is on-line! ...I then
crank up a OpenVPN tunnel back to my hub server, which has a static IP
address and several incoming ports to choose from, depending on what type
of public firewall setup that may exist.

This method typically works well, even if having to go through the captive
portal is an annoying speed bump. The main drawbacks to using public WiFi
are a total lack of QoS---it may work perfectly one moment and have
unusably bad choppy audio the next...

I was traveling last week and took along my portable hamVOIP V1.5 pi allstar node that I kluged together at the last minute. It’s similar to the nice portable allstar node that Doug built that is show on his hamvoip webpage. I had an HDMI display, mouse and keyboard to enter the WiFi access and it worked great while I stayed with family using their home internet.

I few nights I stayed at a hotel that required me to log into their Wi-Fi using a browser by entering my room number and my last name, but as far as I know V1.5 does not have a browser option so I was not able to enter the information and use the hotel WiFI.

I stayed at two different hotels and both required the same information to use their WiFi.

Anyone have a suggestion or work around that will allow the node to work on this type of hotel WIFI?

Thanks
