[arm-allstar] How to connect to hotel Wi-Fi while traveling with a portable node

Steve,
Using public wifi can be challenging unless it is completely open which
is rare. It is not easy to get around a web based authentication with a
command based browser. Fortunately since most have hotspots on their
smartphones this is primarily what is being used. If you do not have a
smartphone or you do not want to use it for an Internet connection you can
get something like FreedomPOP. You would one time buy a small box and the
service is free up to 500M/month or 1G/month if you signup with 10 friends.
There are enough people in our network using it to get the 10 friends. For
$4/month you can get unused data carry over. There are other Internet
wireless only services and connections. I believe all the major carriers
offer it but it would cost more than FreedomPOP. 1G/month should be
adequate unless you are a big time portable user. Remember that that
listening uses as much time as talking so you have to be aware of that if
you are connected to a busy node. Also using a lower bandwidth CODEC like
ILBC would cut down on data usage.
If you need more information about FreedomPOP or portable node connections
in general I can put you in touch with several people using it regularly.
You need to be careful with FreedomPOP or any of the services because they
will often try to trick you into cost items you do not need.
At this time the only service that is known to be problematic is AT&T and
we have a fix for that. So if you are attempting to use that service and
having problems let me know.
