[arm-allstar] Portable Node Excessive Data Usage

Frank,

Headed out the door but here is a quick answer... The usage of course
depends on the activity of the node BOTH RX and TX. So if the hub you
connected to was busy you would see a large amount of data use. From the
amount of usage and duration you specified it does sound high. I suspect
there was a lot of air time on that hub.

Assuming you are using hamvoip.org code you do have the option of using the
ILBC (internet low bandwith codec) codec BUT the node you connect to would
also have to be using hamvoip.org code and support it. I assume you are now
using the g726 codec or perhaps the even higher bandwidth ulaw codec which
some connections require.

One way around this would be to run a home node of your own which would be
connected wherever you want. Then connect your portable node to your home
node using ILBC. This is also a good way to do it because others cannot
connect to a cell portable node but they could connect to your home node
which you would be connected to and thus make contact with you.

ILBC is about 1/3 the data requirements of g726 with just a slight loss of
quality. Most would not even hear the difference.
