I use a 3 port ARCOM controller. One port is for the repeater, one for IRLP, and one for Allstar, which also has Echolink. So that covers the bases. A simple 3 digit DTMF code that all users know switches port 1 to either port 2 or port 3. Or, a secret code will connect all three ports for bridging. 

At times I have substituted my HF rig for port 2 for remote base activity. 

So while repeater controllers are “old school” in some people’’s minds, they do offer simplicity and flexibility.
