[arm-allstar] usbradio on Raspberry Pi 3

I have a repeater that does not have built-in CTCSS encode/decode (it was a factory option that is no longer available).  I recall using usbradio on the Pi2 to encode and decode CTCSS was not recommends, but I wonder if the Pi3 would work?

I know I can add a com-spec or other external hardware PL encoder/decoder, but if the Pi3 will work I would prefer to use it.
