Hi Doug,

Thanks so much for your kind and expert help!   I see what you mean - now that I am in the process of building an Allstar setup based on your website my imagination started to go a bit wild...  I wanted to add:

- a rotary switch to select microphone or Allstar
- a low-power FM transmitter to be able to monitor general ham traffic throughout the home
- hey wait a sec - why not get the Raspberry Pi to do packet radio too
- but the audio is getting digitized and sent to the Raspberry Pi, so why not transmit this via Bluetooth
- and why not send it over the home network to Apple devices
- and while we are at it hook up a USB SDR dongle to build a scanner
- and a Ham-it-Up up converter to get HF coverage with spectrum analyzer and waterfall display
- eventually look into building a software-defined transceiver (not as loony as it sounds)
- so basically this is a beer-budget multimode ham station, with emphasis on digital modes...

Anyway, Ed N3IAS reminded me kindly that I might be trying to build a skyscraper before I had built the foundation!!!  :)

So for now I'm focused on just a nice project box, a simple rotary switch to select microphone or DMK URI interface, and using Velcro to hold the Raspberry Pi and DMK URI nicely in place...

baby steps!!!!

Thanks very much Doug for all your help, and excellent web documentation for this!!!

Hello,

I?m John N3FPZ and new to Allstar. Have connected to John?s node on 446.200 in Jenkintown, PA and I?m interested in learning about this technology and possibly building a node using a Raspberry Pi and URI interface.

Long story short I am interested in building up a project box with the Raspberry Pi, URI interface and a switching setup to connect wither a microphone or the computer setup for Allstar. Just a nice convenient package. Maybe also hook it to a low-power FM transmitter to be able to monitor the ham bands from anywhere in the home.

The idea that hit me is probably really obvious: If you have the interface the the Raspberry Pi already hooked up, would it be possible to extend the functionality to become more of a general-purpose packet TNC? Perhaps even add Amtor, Slow-scan TV, Weather satellites, RTTY, CW? and do it all way cheaper than commercial TNCs. Do it all in the Raspberry Pi?

But I suspect that I am re-inventing a few wheels here!!!

-john

John,

Good to hook up with you locally and I think you have a good handle on
Allstar.

As for the other modes you mentioned - all of them can easily be achieved
on a PI2 or 3 but not on the same board as Allstar. These boards are so
cheap and draw such little energy it pays to just setup another board. If
you have another Pi3 try loading Ubuntu mate on it. Free download on the
Internet. With an HDMI monitor and a keyboard/mouse it makes a great system.

Talk to you on the air and get a hold of me direct if you need assistance.
