You can if you want put what's the point. You can turn down the volume and not hear it. If you want to listen to the input audio of the node you can turn it up. The volume would have no effect on the audio level to the FOB. It is often useful to have that audio feedback to test.

Doug,
Is there any reason why I can't disconnect the internal speaker and microphone? 
I notice in the documents a 1/8 plug is installed to disconnect the internal mic. I figured I don't need the internal speaker after I'm done testing it and setting it up.
