No, Chuck, you simply know how to find what you're looking for!    I found
this in some documentation on allstarlink.org

Receiver with audio coming directly from the output of the discriminator:
carrierfrom=dsp
ctcssfrom=dsp
rxdemod=flat

But, is that saying I have to tap the audio at the discriminator?  I was
hoping to get it directly from the external speaker jack without digging
into the radio.   If it will work from there it may be the answer I was
looking for.  

Thanks for the suggestion.  I will explore while I wait for others to

Maybe I'm all wet, but isn't there a DSP mode  - then you don't need COS or
a PL decode output.
