[arm-allstar] the Pi3 is on the way...

Dave,

Yes, the Odroid has 1G Ethernet. Not a big deal for what we do but if you wanted to make a router out of it maybe so.

The Pi2 (and 3) Ethernet still hangs on the USB but the SW USB issues are mostly fixed. SW is the problem on the Odroid not HW. If they could get their SW issues fixed it would be a good product. But they still have to fight the support issues where the RPi2 leaves them in the dust. Having a compatible I/O bus to the Pi is a big plus though.
The BBB still has a niche and they are coming out with some nifty new products although still only one USB. That shouldn't be a deterrent though as there are many good USB hubs and I have never had a problem with any I have tried on the BBB. For a neat project see http://bela.io/

Doug,
I will defer to you on this.
It was my understanding the Odroid Cx has superior Ethernet throughput which I considered important. But if the USB is bad that is a huge issue. I am big fan of the BBB. Not having enough USB ports is an issue on the BBB.
Has Pi fixed all their USB issues and moved the Ethernet off the USB which I always considered a huge sin in the first version?

I use Odroids here with Allstar and Asterisk but with no radios. The Odroid is a nice board but has a serious USB driver problem that they have never fixed on the C1 or C1+. It also suffers from lack of updated software at least on Archlinux. They are still way back in the 3.x kernels. That may very well be why it has USB issues as there were many updates and fixs since the current kernel they are using. You can read all the complaints on the forums.

There are many boards that look good on paper but when you really get to testing them and look at the SW support they are seriously lacking. The C2 uses the same USB interface so it is unlikely it has been fixed either.

You can't beat the Pi's for ongoing support. Even the BBB has good support and 4.x kernels at this point. There would really be no advantage to using an Odroid over a Pi. The Odroid costs more, has less support, and gives no real Allstar advantage.

I see they announced the Odroid C2 recently.. If you want a screaming SBC with high throughput look there. I really hope that more consideration is given what is a superior platform.

No commercial relationship with them but a customer of their boards.

We have several people locally running two nodes on the Pi2 without problems. The instructions on how to do that are in the setup howto on the hamvoip.org web page.

My point was that in a situation where you want maximum reliability is that a good thing to do. This would be especially true at a remote site. Set them up as separate servers and if one goes down for some reason the rest stay running.

I've experienced issues with ACID on the higher priced boards when I install two nodes, with both USB devices on one bus. Placing them on separate buses works best. The RPi 2 shows logical positions of 4 devices in one bus. If the Pi 3 also utilizes a single bus for all devices I'd question the wisdom of trying to put two radio nodes on one RPi3.
Any thoughts on this?

Whether the Pi3 would handle more than two USB connections remains to be seen. There is much more to it than processor speed. That being said why would you want to do that? I can understand the old way of doing things where you had one higher priced PC with hard drives, size, heat, power consumption and you didn't want to create another just to run more nodes but with the cheap small board computers that is not an issue. Most that would want to run more than two nodes are using Allstar to control repeaters and having it all run from one board is not a good way to do it from a redundancy standpoint. If one system goes down you have lost all repeaters or nodes.

I would even go as far as saying it would be much better to have one server per repeater or node. The only hardware you are adding is another Pi and power supply, not a big expense. The boards and nodes can be Ethernet connected as easily as if they were on the same server. That is the beauty of Allstar, you can have as many "ports" as you want.

I think we have to look at this from the perspective of current cost, power consumption, etc and not from the old large computer paradigm.
