Yes, you can potentially cause issues.  Unless there is a reason to do so,
I would not update. If you have to update, it's best to make a complete
image backup prior to updating the system.

You can use the image-backup.sh script and write to a usb drive or you can
shutdown, and create a backup image of the microSD card  using the PC ("dd"
for linux, or Win32 Image Tool).
