Yes, you have the option of removing the mic or putting in the dummy plug. Your choice. Leaving the mic allows it to be used as a normal handheld if you desire.

(face palm) I forgot to remove the mic! I put in the stereo plug which is a little bulkier but I guess with the mic still in, the 888 still can function as a normal handheld with a long DB25 tail. I also did have the radio on NFM but I had set my handheld to NFM as well. Thanks for everyone's help!

Andy,

Yes try Sam's idea. Also did you remove the mic or are you using the dummy plug. If you are using the dummy plug make sure it is all the way in and it has to be a stereo plug not mono. It is the large plug.

I am using a 10K resistor off the mic connection as I remember and my TX level is set to 250, yours may vary but it shouldn't be too far off from there.

The 888's don't actually have high/low power although it is programmable. They are always about 1W. This is fine for a local node radio. I set the channels to low when I program not that it makes a difference.

USB cable worked great! I finally have my node up and running. The only thing that seems to be an issue is fairly low transmit audio level. I turned both of the transmit audio channels to 11 (999) in the configuration and there didn't seem to be any noticeable change. Any ideas where I should look next? The received signal strength is very high, just quiet audio.

Thanks Doug!
I am going to use a USB cable. I just ordered all the supplies and am looking forward to the 888s node.

Andy,

I used an USB cable for my 888 node. I soldered the wires directly to the
888 circuit board and put the resistors and capacitor in the DB-25 Hood.
I kept the cable fairly short and it works very well.

Andy,

In the photos I used Belden 5 wire shielded cable because I had some on hand but it needs only 4 wires and a ground (COS, PTT, RX-AUD, TX-AUD, GND) so an old USB cable could be used. They are generally 4 wires shielded. The shield being the ground. You might have some other similar cables laying around you could repurpose. It should definitely be shielded and if you are using the shield for the ground make sure it is connected at both ends.

Hi Doug,

What are you using for the cable that you are soldering to the 888? I have a male DB25 connector, but I'm unsure as to what kind of cable to buy to solder between the DB25 and the 888. It only needs 6 wires right?

Thanks & 73,
Andy

I added a link on the hamvoip.org page on my mod of a Baofeng 888. Here is the direct link -

This is a take-off of W0FCM's page also linked on hamvoip.org but just done slightly differently.

It is working well.
