[arm-allstar] First Time Hardware Configuration

Hugo,

While you could connect a mouse and keyboard I have never done it in bringing up the BBB Allstar code and it is not necessary. It is very easy to do it via ssh from another computer. If you have windows download putty or winscp and use it. For Linux just ssh in a command window.

To do either you first need to get the IP address that the BBB is coming up on. There are a number of ways to do that. If you know morse code it is displayed on the forth LED on the BBB about 30 seconds after boot. It sends hi hi then the IP address three times. Another way is to connect the USB FOB - DMK URI or modified FOB - and the radio and if everything is wired correctly you should hear it say the IP address over the radio - not the (node radio) radio connected to the URI but on the second radio you have listening to the node radio. This will not work in all cases because the BBB is configured for certain radio's. It works fine with the Alinco radios.

The easiest way to determine the IP address is to boot up and then look in your LAN router. There should be a status section for the local LAN showing connected devices and you should see a bbb-allstar device listed with its IP address. Use that address to ssh to the bbb and login and then run the setup. You do not need anything connected to the BBB except the Ethernet at this point.

On the computer you are using to talk to the BBB you would - using Windows in putty enter the IP address in the hostname block and port 222. Using Linux in a command window you would enter - ssh root at ipaddress -p 222

After that just login and answer the configuration questions and you should be on the air very quickly.
Don't hesitate to ask again if this is not clear or not working for you.

When I run the Image for the first time on the BBB, do I connect a USB hub to the BBB then the URI, mouse and keyboard etc to it.

Thanks
