Hi Kent,
Running a local DNS server is an hold over from my building hundreds of
custom routers. DNS on various ISP's is one of the things that I found to
be broken most frequently. Most ISP's allow traffic to the root servers,
so, I found that running local DNS fixes more issues than you might
imagine.
However, running a local DNS server isn't a requirement for operation--as
long as you do have a working DNS server available.
Are you having trouble with DNS??? The default DNS configuration in this
distro shouldn't pose any security hazards.
