I can tell you my experience with TWC and moving to your own router/modem when having their phone service.

This solution worked for my brother and a co worker of mine (both in western NYS), so i'd probably call to verify with them first since your in PA. They don't support the end user having a customer owned modem that has a phone port on it (not sure if any are even available). So the solutions is two modems. Buy your own modem that will be used for your internet services, and continue using their modem for VOIP only. Just put a splitter on your cable line and run one line to the TW modem and one line to your own modem. Once you have your own modem they will stop charging you rent on the other one even though your still using it for phone. Then your own modem can be in bridge mode and you can handle all port forwarding on your router that is plugged into it. I know its a super hacky solution and you have to run an extra piece of equipment in the house, but it was the only solution supported to get away from renting their modem if you have TW phone service. FWIW this was suggested by a TW rep to me when i was reaming him for not allowing my brother to buy his own modem.

Happy to help out if you decide to go this route.

Phil V

K2ELV

On Sun, Apr 17, 2016 at 1:00 PM, <arm-allstar-request@hamvoip.org> wrote:

Send arm-allstar mailing list submissions to
I am writing on behalf of a user in Ohio that has Times Warner Cable. I have no experience with them as we have Comcast and Verizon here in PA.

He is a new Allstar user and is trying to get port forwarding working. At first he had two routers in series not knowing that the TWC supplied box was both a modem and a router. So port forwarding obviously did not work.

I told him to call TWC and have their modem turned into bridge mode and then do the nat'ing and port forwarding at the user supplied modem. TWC informed him that since he had all services, phone, TV, and Internet through them he would not be able to do that. They also said they do not authorized or allow port forwarding in their modem/router for security reasons.

This sounds ridiculous to me. If this is the case he is caught between a rock and a hard place. I think maybe he was given bad info and since the TWC modem router is, I believe, a Netgear he should be able to set this up himself.

I see that TWC does allow user supplied modems and they have a list of compatible ones. I think the phone is the sticking point and it looks like you would need to have two modems if you had the phone. One supplied but them at no cost for the phone and the user supplied one. The signal would be split between them.

Does anyone have TWC with these services and using Allstar and able to port forward freely?
Doug,

I have a node at my office with TWC business class which is phone, tv, and
internet. I looked up the modem/router model number on the web and used the
default login/pass and did everything in their equipment.

Also at home I have their residential service and I didn't want to pay the
"lease" fee for their modem and I bought one off amazon.

It's doable!
That would be your best bet - log in to the existing modem/router. If
you get a second modem, they'll likely charge for a second service, even
if you purchase the modem, as it will take another IP address.

Keep in mind that this could all change very soon if the Charter/Time
Warner merger is approved. Charter builds the cost of their modem into
the monthly fee, so they claim that the modem is "free." You are allowed
to purchase your own, but you'll receive no price reduction. I was going
to purchase my own modem to avoid the TWC modem fee, but put that on
hold because if my hunch is correct, Charter will pull some stunt and
nix a list of modems that "had" been approved.

Not looking forward to the merger. They rarely have favorable results
for subscribers. Been through a few and each time things got worse.
