We have discussed this among our group and I will also say again that either way you need to build electronics and the apprehension towards modifying the FOB is really unjustified. It is not that hard and you really have little to lose in trying. On the other hand if you spiked the I/O on the main board you might be looking at replacing a much more expensive item. Having wires running from two different places just makes for a sloppier and more prone to problems installation.
