It requires a COS signal from the radio that follows PL. Depending on the radio this should be available, often on a rear panel connector. If you can't find it tell us what radio you are using and someone might possibly help in that regard.

Although there has been a slight improvement in usbradio in the latest svn it still does not have the exceptionally clean audio that simpleusb does. There will also be some additional capabilities in simpleusb on both the RPi2 and the BBB in the upcoming release that will make its use more desirable. Future releases might include an entirely new USB channel driver that we are currently working on. Stay tuned for feature announcements very soon.

73 Doug
WA3DSP
http://www.crompton.com/hamradio

Date: Fri, 27 Mar 2015 08:53:16 -0400
From: N1XBM@amsat.org
To: arm-allstar@hamvoip.org
Subject: [arm-allstar] Simplex node

I am setting up a simplex node using my BBB. The node will be PL ' D on both TX and RX. From other notes I've read it looks like I need to find COS in my radio. Is this correct? Or can I just use audio in, audio out, ptt, and ground. I am guessing I need the COS but I want to confirm it.
