Yes this can be an issue and is usually caused by EMI either from an RF source or a switching power supply. An HF station or other high RF source can definitely cause it and this is not specific to the BBB it also happens on a PC. Ferrites over the USB and radio leads often solves the problem. Also keep leads short and wind extra length in tight circles. The power supply problems cannot be solved by ferrites and is often caused by bad wall warts that have high common mode voltages. This couples through the BBB over the USB cable to a radio ground. You can check this with a scope. A fix would be to run the BBB from a linear supply or from your radio 12V supply with a 1A three terminal 5V regulator on a heat sink.

I have about 6-8 BBB's running and I have not had the issue in general running although I can reproduce it. I do put ferrites on my leads and I use power supplies that do not have high common mode voltages.

Now the good news - We are working on a new version with much improved USB recovery support in a new kernel. It will now recover from USB problems completely in usbradio. In our tests you can pull the USB cable out and put it back in hot and it will recover. We are still working on getting the same results with simpleusb which is the recommended mode for the BBB. So try the above fixes and if you are still having problems rest assured there is a real fix in the future.

73 Doug
WA3DSP
http://www.crompton.com/hamradio

Date: Wed, 13 Aug 2014 12:43:43 -0500
From: nx4y@verizon.net
To: arm-allstar@hamvoip.org
Subject: [arm-allstar] BBB locking up

Has anyone had issues with their BBB locking up when using a DMK URI? I have left mine running overnight only to find the next morning the green URI light isn't blinking, or today, it was sort of "dimming" instead of flashing on and off. Yesterday when this happened I tried to SSH in, and when i entered my password the BBB locked up completely, couldn't even ping it! Had to power down and back up. Today I could ssh in, but the URI still wouldn't go back to blinking. This wont do for a remote site, obviously.. anyone else seen this or have any ideas for a cure?
