I run a ClearRPT, from Node-Ventures.com, on my TKR-820.  It will also do DMR, etc.  But the best part is that I can control the repeater through an APP on my phone.  I was easy to wire up and get going... uses hamvoip and dvswitch.

Hey guys.  Hope everyone is doing well.  Alright, so I may take a leap of
faith here, and try hamvoip as a repeater controller, and would love some
feedback.  I have a quantar here.  I've always used something like an arcom
or scom.  So here's my first question, I'm assuming I would adjust pretty
much everything in rpt.conf when it comes to courtesy tones, IDs, and all
of that.
I would assume when I put this in repeater mode, I can make allstar
connections like normal and all that.
If anyone can give me some words of wisdom from personal experience, that
would be great.

Cheers,

Jed.n1jbc

Good evening Jed,
I am using hamvoip as my repeater controller on a motorola GR1225 with a
DMKengineering URI. It works great and is very reliable/stable. I actually
prefer hamvoip
over a scom as it is much more configurable. It will take you as far as
your imagination.
You can connect to other nodes via DTMF or supermon, Echolink can be added,
schedule automatic node drops or connects, make your own announcements,
add skywarn plus for weather warnings and so much more. The majority of the
configuration is done in the RPT.CONF file. On the first boot, you are
walked
through the initial configuration which will get you up and running.
My best suggestion would be to visit hamvoip.com  and read through
the documents. I find myself using them all the time. There is a lot of
great information there.

Good luck and 73

You are correct.

rpt.conf is your friend :).

Many hamvoip nodes are repeater controllers, like mine.

As Ahrnold would say, "DOOO EEET!"

I had two Kenwood TKR-series repeaters I was Trustee for a club. Each one was located in a hospital. We wanted to link them together. Now Kenwood had a built in controller in their repeaters that we used strictly for ID. There were other features but I never used them.

So to kill two birds with one stone I used two Allstar Nodes. I used two RA-35 boards from Master Communications and wired them into the DB-25 on the back of the repeaters and then did a small amount of reprogramming the repeaters to utilize the proper pinout on the DB-25 connector. They provided the linking, the id'ing and the time and temperature. It worked great.  ID happened every 10 minutes and the time and temp at the top of the hour.

Jed,

My repeater is on full duplex UHF and made out of a pair of Motorola CDM mobiles and a DB products duplexer. I am using the RIM Lite -RM (Repeater Maker) that plugs right into the back of both CDM radios presenting a single USB connection to the Pi.

As Alan said, it is optionally customizable beyond your imagination if you wish (not required).

For example, I wrote a script to download the ARRL News Fridays at 6pm. It then breaks the file into segments at the periodic 3 second silence intervals. Then, at 8pm it plays the segments in the correct order order, pausing between each, to reset the timeout timer and see if anybody wants to use the repeater.

You can also connect to it directly from a smartphone or a VoIP desk phone... it can get very complex if you choose.

We use hamvoip to run both of PSRG's repeaters here in Seattle.  Node 2462
is a wide area coverage, 6 receiver voting system using RTCMs on all
receivers/transmitters. With tools like Supermon 2 and SSH access to
control the node - I'll never use another dedicated repeater controller.

I will say, the one and only thing I don't really like about using
HamVoIP as a repeater controller is the non-defeatable delay between RX
and TX. Even with rxaudiodelay at 0, you'll still get a 240 or so MS
delay, which increases when you add more for squelch tail elimination,
of course. This is a limitation of Asterisk.

The result is that, with some radios, if they go from TX back to RX
quick enough, you'll hear a bit of your own transmission when you let go
of the key. I have this even with my little Hotspotradios full duplex
USB repeater, or when I'm using my TM-V71A as a full duplex cross band
node controlled by HamVoIP.

Other than that, as far as designing macros, scheduling links and state
changes, it's fantastic. It will be even more fantastic in the future
with the addition of iopipe for audio processing and other things.
I know of at least two large systems here that are using HamVoIP as
repeater controllers, in conjunction with RTCM boards with several
remote voting receivers each, and that seems to work quite well. Most of
the receivers are connected via a microwave link, but a couple of them
are on just the regular public internet.
