Hi Marc,
Yes, private nodes and networks are very easy to setup. How many nodes
are you talking about?? Do you want any public connectivity?
The reason the total number of private nodes matters, is the methods used
vary, depending on whether you're talking about a few nodes or many.

As for an entire private network, are you wanting to use the Internet for
linking? ...Or, a completely private IP network?
If using the Internet, I would recommend the ZeroTier VPN as a starting
point, since this software will generate one large network, where each
node can "see" all the others, using private IP addresses. Zerotier will
also solve NAT and IPv6 issues, should those be any factors you must
