Dear All,
Thank you for all your help and suggestions. In the end, I modified a new CM 108 usb sound card fob for the Pi, and, bingo!, PTT now behaves as it should, and all seems ok with my node.
Cheers.

All star sees my node, and the radios are talking to each other on power up. However, when I turn on my node, the 888 starts to Tx and stays Tx?ing until the 888 Tx default time out kicks in. When I PTT my external ht the node briefly goes into Rx, then again defaults to Tx for the default period.
