I think where a VPN suggestion comes in is insuring that all nodes have 
a reliably accessible static IP address. Maybe I'm wrong about that.

You can also do this without using a VPN by using a dynamic DNS, then 
pointing the private nodes at those instead of an IP address. At least 
so long as those records are maintained, everything should be fine. I 
have a couple of private nodes using namecheap's dynamic DNS updater on 
one of my domains, and it works fine. Otherwise, you'll need a static 
public or private IP for continued reliable service.

Or, you could just add the |x option to the extension on the node that 
you're connecting to, but that's a security risk, since this bypasses 
local lookup/authentication to see if your node is who/where it says it is.
