So far, ranked from best to worst, here's what I've experienced when 
it comes to my node recognizing DTMF commands.

1. IAXRPT: 100% (not surprising)
2. Yaesu FTM-100DR: at least 90%
3. Baofeng UV5R: Probably about 75%
4. Kenwood TH-D74A: less-than 50%.

The Kenwood is a high-quality radio otherwise. Anybody have a theory 
as to why it's DTMF output is problematic?

My node's TX and RX audio levels are both set to 500, which as far as 
I can tell, is unity gain.
