Don,
I think I misunderstood what you were attempting, too. So, directly ATA
to ATA, no asterisk. Yes, some adapters will allow this by directly
"dialing" the IP address of the of the 2nd ATA, from the 1st ATA. Some of
the Grandstream ATA's would allow this. I tried this for testing, but
nothing more. Also, let me mention that this is a bit of ancient history;
I haven't used an HT-386 in probably 10 years. A concern with exposing
old hardware directly to the Internet would be the likelihood there will be
exploitable vulnerabilities---so, take that into consideration.
